One of the most popular Savoy operas, The Pirates of Penzance is frequently performed by companies and conductors who otherwise have little specific expertise in Sullivan's music, or with full pit orchestras. If that sentence describes you, perhaps you'll find this page to be helpful.

Please note that the Pirates materials described here are for the show as originally composed by Arthur Sullivan, not the version produced by Joseph Papp and the Public Theater of New York City in 1980, and later made into a film.

This Note8 edition is based on Sullivan's autograph score, which is available online here.  It is also designed to be compatible with the Kalmus parts, the Kalmus score, and the Dover score.  Score and parts contain both Kalmus rehearsal letters and Dover rehearsal numbers. They also contain variants and explanatory text describing the most significant differences between all of these sources.  For a fully detailed comparison of all of the sources, click here.

Parts for alternative instruments

It can be a challenge to recruit willing, available, competent pit musicians, especially on certain instruments.  Sullivan did not write for the newfangled inventions of Adolf Sax, but in a pinch saxophones might help to fill out your wind section:  alto sax playing French horn parts, soprano sax covering Oboe, baritone sax instead of Bassoon.  Since the original instruments can play lower notes than the equivalent saxophones can, the Note8 alternative parts include adjustments to move those low notes into a playable octave.  The original notes also appear in the Note8 alternative parts, since some models of instruments are equipped with keys to reach lower notes.
